FROM THE DIVISION CHAIR
Sandy Wayne, University of Illinois at Chicago
Greetings from Chicago, home of the 2009 AOM
Meeting! As Chair of the HR Division, I'd like to tell you
about some of our new initiatives and plans for the
2009 AOM Meeting as well as provide a recap of the
2008 AOM meeting held in Anaheim. Before doing so,
I want to thank a number of our members who have
gone "above and beyond" in serving the division in
leadership roles. Most importantly, John
Hollenbeck (Michigan State) has been an
outstanding Chair for our division during the past year.
John has been a wonderful leader-accomplishing a
great deal in a short period of time and making it fun
along the way. No one can replace John and I feel very
fortunate to follow him as Division Chair. Luckily, John
will continue to serve on the Executive Committee for
the coming year.
Four individuals, who were elected by our members
for the Executive Committee, have completed their
three-year terms. These individuals worked tirelessly
on behalf of the Division. Thank you to David Allen
(University of Memphis), Maria Kraimer
(University of Iowa), Paul Sparrow (Lancaster
University), and Kelly Zellars (University of
North Carolina, Charlotte) for serving the HR division
so well during the past three years. A number of
individuals were elected by our members last spring
to the Executive Committee. We welcome Jenny
Hoobler (University of Illinois at Chicago),
David Lepak (Rutgers University), Hui
Liao (University of Maryland), and Steve
Werner (University of Houston) to the Executive
Committee. Our division also made an excellent
choice in selecting Murray Barrick (Texas A&M
University) as a Division Officer. This year Murray
serves as the PDW Chair for our Division. I also want
to thank Tim DeGroot (Midwestern State
University), who has served as our webmaster and is
stepping down from this position. Tim spent a great
deal of time making sure our website was filled with
timely and useful information. Thanks Tim for your
many years of service to the Division!
A priority for the HR Division for the coming year is to
increase involvement of our members. Our
membership growth has occurred in two areas:
doctoral students and international members. We are
in the process of planning a number of Professional
Development Workshops (PDWs) for the 2009 AOM
meeting that we hope will interest our members. One
is a PDW that will be geared for doctoral students who
are in the first or second year of their program. This
will compliment the doctoral consortium, which is
targeted for more senior students. In terms of
reaching out to our international members, John
Hollenbeck (Michigan State) has created the HR
Ambassadors committee. This committee consists of
HR division members from over 40 different countries
and will create a stronger connection with our
international members.
The HR Division's program at the 2008 AOM meeting
was filled with great sessions, workshops, and
networking events. There's not enough space to
recognize all of the Division members who helped to
make the AOM meeting a success but there are two
individuals who were essential. John Delery
(University of Arkansas) served as the Professional
Development Workshop Chair and Howard
Klein (The Ohio State University) served as our
Program Chair. Thanks to John and Howard for all of
their efforts in creating a great AOM meeting for the HR
Division.
The awards committee, co-chaired by Wendy
Boswell (Texas A&M University) and Theresa
Glomb (University of Minnesota) involved over 80
division members in selecting our 2008 award
winners. We would like to recognize and congratulate
the 2008 award winners (listed in the Awards section
of the newsletter, below).
Last, but not least, if you are interested in being more
involved in the HR Division or if you have any
suggestions, please send me an e-mail (
sjwayne@uic.edu).

2009 HR DIVISION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
Reminder for Call for Proposals
You are encouraged to submit Professional
Development Workshops (PDWs) to the annual
Academy of Management Meeting, The Human
Resource (HR) Division
(http://www.hrdiv.org).
The PDW sessions are scheduled prior to the
scholarly program between 8am Friday (8/7/09) and 5
pm Saturday (8/8/09).
The PDW format is highly flexible and can take nearly
any form (workshops, tutorials, panels, debates,
round table discussions, etc.). PDWs provide the
opportunity to experiment with new models and ideas
for sessions that do not fit within the confines of the
regular program. Sessions on teaching, international
HR, linking HR research and practice, and facilitating
Division member development are encouraged. This
year, for example, we hope to have a series of 3
PDWs dealing with teaching issues, so you are
encouraged to think broadly and innovatively when
proposing PDWs.
If you have questions or would like to discuss or
suggest a workshop idea, please contact the HR
Division PDW Chair Murray Barrick, at
mbarrick@mays.tamu.edu or 979-845-0329.
All proposals should be submitted using the new
submission process found at
http://submissions.aomonline.org/2009. The
submission deadline is January 15, 2009 but earlier
submissions are encouraged. Note that there is
limited space on the PDW program and we cannot
guarantee that all proposals will be accepted.

AOM ANNUAL MEETING 2009
|
John Delery, Program Chair
CALL FOR PAPERS
The Human Resources Division encourages you to
submit papers and symposia for the 2009 annual
meeting. The deadline for paper and symposia
submissions is January 15, 2009 at 5:00 PM
Eastern Standard Time.
Specific Domain: The Human Resources
Division is interested in understanding, identifying,
and improving the effectiveness of HR practices
(global and domestic) and determining the optimal fit
between these practices and organizational
strategies, cultures, and performance indicators. The
emphasis is on the study of the employment
relationship at the individual, group, organizational,
societal, and cross-cultural levels of analysis and the
impact of the employment relationship on outcomes
critical to the organization and its applicants (both
present and past employees and their
representatives). Topics include a broad spectrum of
issues pertaining to the acquisition, allocation,
development, utilization, maintenance, and evaluation
of humans as resources in work organizations.
Special Instructions:
The HR Division encourages submissions that are
innovative in terms of format and/or content.
Specifically, the Division is interested in submissions
that pertain to HR-related research, teaching, and
service activities. As always, we encourage
submissions that are consistent with the Division's on-
going concern with bridging the science/practice gap
or the conference theme: "Green Management
Matters".
Division Awards: Plaques will be awarded to
the author(s) of the Best Competitive Paper and to the
author(s) of the Best Student Paper. To be considered
for the Best Student Paper award, the paper must be
clearly identified as a student paper at the time of
submission.
CALL FOR REVIEWERS
If you are interested in being a part of the review
process, we highly encourage you to sign up as a
volunteer reviewer for the HR division. The review
period for the 2009 Annual Meeting is from January
15, 2009 (Submission Deadline) to February 13, 2009
(Review Deadline), although you might be asked to
review early submissions that come in before the
submission deadline.
To sign up, please visit
http://review.aomonline.org/ and click the "Sign Up
Now" button in order to create a profile and choose
your areas of expertise (i.e. keywords) for the divisions

calendars - It's only 9 months until the HR Division
Doctoral Consortium at the 2009 Academy of
Management meeting in Chicago! We're in the
process of putting together a great doctoral
consortium. Plan on meeting accomplished HR
faculty and scholars, learning what editors really think,
sharing ideas, hearing career advice that you may not
get elsewhere, and getting a chance to network and
socialize with your peers! Keep tuned to future
newsletters and the HR Division Website for more
details and deadlines.

A MESSAGE FROM THE HR DIVISION'S JUNIOR FACULTY CONSORTIUM COMMITTEE
|
After last year's very successful junior faculty
consortium at Anaheim, we are hard at work
organizing next year's consortium. A special thanks
goes out to all who worked very hard to make last
year's session a success. This includes our panelists
Alan Witt, Maria Kramer, Janet Marler, Dan Moshavi,
Ian Williamson, Ken Brown, David Allen, Micki
Kacmar, Scott Seibert, and John Hollenbeck. Without
their support of the HR Division, the consortium would
not be possible. We are also taking to heart the
suggestions from last year's participants to make next
year's consortium even better.
Mark your calendars for the 2009 HR Junior Faculty
Consortium in Chicago, which will take place on
Friday, August 7th starting at 2 pm and run through
Saturday, August 8th. We are designing a set of
sessions related to teaching, research, and the tenure
process that will be relevant for faculty at the starting
gate of their academic careers. There will also be
plenty of opportunities to network with the other
participants, senior faculty members from other
universities, and editors from the major journals. All
session topics will be unique from those covered in
the HR Division doctoral consortium. Anyone who
completed their PhD within the past 5 years and is
looking for tips to succeed in an academic career in
HRM will be welcome to attend the 2009 Junior
Faculty Consortium. Please look for further
information in future newsletters.
See you in Chicago!

INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
Steve Werner, University of Houston
As the new chair of the IHRM Committee, I'd
like to thank the previous chair, Paul Sparrow, for his
service to the HR Division. I'd also like to thank Bing
Bai, Paul Boselie, Pawan Budhwar, Liza Castro
Christiansen, Naj Ghosheh, Deanne Den Hartog,
John Hollenbeck, David Meyer, and Sumita Raghuram
for agreeing to be members of this committee. The
website of the IHRMC ( http://www.cba.uh.
edu/ihrmc) is now in its eleventh year. The
website is designed to provide academics interested
in International Human Resource Management
information regarding the committee. At the website
you will also find postings of upcoming IHRM-related
conferences.
Please be aware that this committee exists to provide
needed services to Academy members interested in
International HRM. For this coming year our hope is to
create more awareness of international human
resource management activities and opportunities.
We have two projects we are currently working on to
achieve this. First, we are working on a pre-
conference workshop for the up-coming Chicago

TEACHING COMMITTEE REPORT
|
The Teaching Committee presented 2 PDWs at
the annual meeting in Anaheim. The first was "How to
publish teaching-related research," with editors from 3
teaching journals presenting the criteria necessary for
publication in their journals. The second PDW had the
individuals with the top rated sessions from the HRIR
Innovative Teaching conference presenting their
teaching ideas. Both sessions were well-attended.
The Teaching committee is discussing ideas for
PDWs for next year's meeting in Chicago. One of the
topics being discussed is "The use of technology in
the HR classroom." Ideas such as teaching from a
remote location, online courses and students' use of
social networking are possible topics. We will be
looking into the possibility of conducting this session
at a classroom computer lab in Chicago.
Due to the extended deadline for submission of
PDWs this year, the Teaching Committee requests
that members of the HR Division contact the chair with
ideas about what you might like to see in a PDW.
Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
The Teaching Committee also requests your
feedback on whether to continue to offer the Innovative
Teaching Award. If you think it is a good idea, please
let the chair know how we might encourage members
to submit applications for the award.
