HR in Business Schools:
Should We All be Cautiously Optimistic?

Is the study of HR management facing a legitimacy crisis in schools of business?

MBA students generally rank HR courses last in terms of perceptions of importance in the curriculum, and this is often reinforced by the attitudes of faculty members from the core disciplines of finance and accounting.

How do business school deans perceive our discipline, and what can we as HR professionals do to enhance our status in business schools?

At our most recent conference in Atlanta, Dr. Richard Klimoski, Dean of the School of Management at George Mason University addressed these issues in a session organized by Janet Marler (SUNY at Albany) and Kelly Zellers (UNC-Charlotte).

While all three speakers provided thoughtful insights into the future of HR programs and academic careers, Dr. Klimoski's presentation focused on the specific steps that individuals could take to enhance their career pursuits with their stakeholders. Therefore, we thought we would provide you his slides outlining specific actions that Division members may want to consider in pursuing professional success in the field of HR.

Dr. Klimoski’s comments focused on the good and bad news facing HR professionals in business schools, as well as specific actions each of us can take to “help the Dean, help you.” The Executive Committee of the HR Division felt that the points raised in this talk were so insightful, that we wanted to make these available to all of our members. You can access the content of Dr. Klimoski’s presentation by clicking here.

If you have any reactions or comments after reviewing the content of this talk, please forward those to John R. Hollenbeck (Division Chair-Elect) at jrh@msu.edu. We may also consider publishing the views of our membership on this critical topic in future newsletters.
