2009 PROGRAM CHAIR REPORT

HR Division Academy Program 2009

The HR Division Program this year in Chicago has something for everyone. There will be numerous opportunities to meet all of your personal goals for the conference, whether they be catching up on the latest research trends or networking with individuals from all over the globe who share your common interests in the management of human resources.

This year it is important to note that the Academy has changed the schedule of the conference. To adjust to this change, the HR Executive Committee has made significant changes to the schedule of some of the events I know you will want to attend. The most significant of these changes is that the HR Division Business Meeting and Reception are now on Sunday rather than Tuesday. The times and locations for these events are listed above in the note from Division Chair, Sandy Wayne.

The scholarly program now takes place on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. So please plan on staying through the end of the day Tuesday, as there are some great sessions scheduled that afternoon. Remember, there are no sessions on Wednesday. The entire program will end at the end of the day Tuesday. Here are a couple of highlights of what is a tremendous HR Division Program:

  • 18 traditional paper sessions where researchers present their new ideas and findings. Each session has four related papers.
  • 30 interactive paper sessions where presenters interact more directly with each other and those interested in common ideas that may cut across traditional boundaries. These sessions also include papers submitted to other divisions.
  • 8 visual paper sessions where presenters post summaries of their papers and are personally available for direct discussion.
  • 32 symposia that range in format from the more traditional paper session to panel sessions and other innovative approaches. Most of these symposia are jointly sponsored by other divisions within the Academy and offer many topics that go beyond those in the traditional paper sessions.

This program would not have been possible without the incredible support of the many members of uor division and many others who volunteered their time to review submissions. In all, over 600 individuals from over 60 countries participated in the review process this year. I wish to thank you all and the members who have volunteered to be session chairs and discussants. Your names will appear in the conference program, but that is little payment for the effort you gave to make this flow as smoothly as it did.

I am very excited about the program and hope that you find it as useful and interesting as I expect. For complete information about the conference, including registration and hotel information, visit the Academy of Management conference web site ( http://meetings.aomonline.org/2009).

I look forward to seeing you all in Chicago!

2009 HR DIVISION JUNIOR FACULTY CONSORTIUM

ATTENTION JUNIOR FACULTY: Are you planning to attend the Academy of Management Meetings in Chicago this year? If so, consider registering for the HR Division's Junior Faculty Consortium.

The Human Resource (HR) Division is dedicated to a better understanding of how work organizations can perform more effectively by better management of their human resources.

We have put together a number of exciting sessions that should be of interest to junior faculty striving to have a successful academic career. We have designed a set of sessions relevant for U.S. and international faculty at the starting gate of their careers. Sessions will include:

  • Challenges of junior faculty members (facilitated by David Lepak, Miguel Quiñones, Diane Johnson, and Judy Tansky);
  • Strategies for getting research done (presented by Tim Judge and Jason Shaw);
  • Juggling multiple demands (presented by David Lepak, and Wendy Boswell);
  • Getting tenure (presented by Rich Klimoski, Mel Fugate, and Paul Tesluk);
  • Strategies for effective teaching (presented by Ian Williamson and Ken Brown);
  • Responding to reviewers (presented by Riki Takeuchi and John Hollenbeck);
  • A journal editor's panel; and
  • Tips from past HR Division leaders on how to succeed in a research career.

Who can attend? All junior faculty at academic institutions (Assistant Professors, Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, and Postdocs) who completed their PhDs within the past five years.

When is it? 2:00PM - 5:00PM on Friday, August 7 (including dinner) and 8:30AM - 5:30PM on Saturday, August 8 (with an optional reception from 5:30PM - 7:00PM).

How do I register? Register through the new PDW central registration system, which can be accessed once you've registered for the conference.

It should be a lot of fun, relaxed, and informative. There is no better way to develop networking opportunities than through the Junior Faculty Workshop. So, plan on arriving in Chicago by Friday afternoon so that you can join our Junior Faculty Consortium.

For more information, please contact: David Lepak ( lepak@smlr.rutgers.edu) or Miguel Quinones ( quinones@cox.smu.edu).

Miguel Quinones, Southern Methodist University - quinones@cox. smu.edu.

2009 HR DOCTORAL STUDENT CONSORTIUM

The HR Doctoral Consortium will be part of the pre-conference program at the 2009 Academy of Management meeting in Chicago. The Consortium will be held on Saturday, August 8th, with a dinner scheduled for the evening of Friday, August 7th. We have an exciting and informative program planned for this year including group discussions on successful dissertation completion, effective networking, finding the right job, and much more. The program will also include a panel discussion with editors of major journals, a keynote address by Gary Latham (University of Toronto), presentations by the winners of the HR Division's Scholarly Achievement and Early Career Achievements Awards, and the opportunity to receive research feedback from successful scholars.

Students interested in attending the consortium should have their primary advisor send a short nomination email to Fred Morgeson (morgeson@msu. edu) by June 1st. This email (or attachments) should include:

  • A letter from the nominee's primary advisor providing a general appraisal of the nominee, including an assessment of his/her progress toward a dissertation defense, expected defense date, and subject of dissertation.
  • A 1-2 page description of the nominee's dissertation idea/methodology and progress on the dissertation.
  • A one-page bio summarizing the nominee's contact information (mailing address, email address, phone number), research and teaching interests, and publications. This one-page bio will be distributed among consortium participants.

The Consortium is intended for students who have made significant progress toward completing their Ph.D. program but have not yet defended their dissertation. Priority will be given to advanced students who are at the dissertation proposal stage. Because space is limited, only one student per program is typically allowed to participate, but additional students from a given program will be considered on a space available basis after the nomination deadline.

If you have any questions regarding the consortium, please feel free to contact Fred (morgeson@msu. edu).

TEACHING COMMITTEE REPORT

The Teaching Committee will be sponsoring a PDW entitled "Challenges and Opportunities in Teaching Online and from Remote Locations", on Friday, August 7 from 10:00AM - 12:10PM. We are delighted to have two outstanding presenters, Diana Deadrick and Randall Dunham, for this presentation. Registration is not required.

The Teaching Committee is pleased to announce a winner for this year's Innovative Teaching Award. Dr. Boris Groysberg of Harvard Business school won the award for his work surrounding the teaching of "Managing Human Capital."

INTERNATIONAL HRM COMMITTEE REPORT

As the new chair of the IHRM Committee, I'd like to thank Bing Bai, Paul Boselie, Pawan Budhwar, Liza Castro Christiansen, Naj Ghosheh, Deanne Den Hartog, James Hayton, John Hollenbeck, David Meyer, and Sumita Raghuram for agreeing to be members of this committee. I'd also like to give special recognition to Liza Castro Christiansen for chairing the PDW sub-committee and John Hollenbeck for chairing the Ambassadors sub-committee and their outstanding work on these sub-committees. The website of the IHRMC (http://www.cba.uh. edu/ihrmc) is now in its 11th year. The website is designed to provide academics interested in International Human Resource Management information regarding the committee and the ambassadors program.

Please be aware that this committee exists to provide needed services to Academy members interested in International HRM. For this coming year our hope is to create more awareness of international human resource management activities and opportunities. We have two projects we are currently working on to achieve this. Our first project focuses on the Ambassadors Program created by John Hollenbeck. He is chairing the sub-committee which will continue to develop the program. This is an exciting initiative. John has identified division members that are opinion leaders around the world. So far more than 50 different countries are represented. Please go to the website to see a list and profiles of the ambassadors.

Second, we have two pre-conference workshops for the upcoming Chicago meeting. The first PDW is an opportunity for the ambassadors to get together to work on a planned casebook and research project. It is titled "Two-in-One: A Casebook on the Critical HR Dimensions in Different Countries and an Article Series on (a Cross-National Survey of) the Perceived Effectiveness of HR". It is scheduled for Friday, August 7th from 8:00AM - 11:00AM in the Erie Room of the Sheraton Chicago. The second PDW is titled "Location, Location, Location: Developing International Perspectives on Strategic HRM". All academy members interested in international HRM research are invited. We hope that you plan to attend.

Although we have these two projects on-going, the committee is always open to undertaking other projects. If you have any suggestions or comments of other services this Committee could provide please do not hesitate to let us know. Thanks and have a great year!
