FROM THE DIVISION CHAIR

|
Howard J. Klein, The Ohio State University
Greetings! Let me first say how honored I am to be serving as your
Division Chair. I also need to thank my predecessors for leaving me
such a wonderful legacy of leadership, innovation, and solid
finances. Special thanks to Sandy
Wayne for the outstanding job she did last year as
Division chair. It is easy and inspiring to follow someone as
dedicated and organized as Sandy.
The Division's Executive Committee recently held a full day meeting
attended by 22 volunteer leaders working on your behalf. I think it
is important to keep in mind that everything the Division does is
done by volunteers. We get some administrative support from the
Academy but the HR Division has no staff, just incredibly committed
and talented members of the Division contributing their time and
energy in service to the field. Four such individuals have completed
their elected terms on the Executive Committee and I want to thank Wendy Boswell,
Deb Cohen,
Judy Tansky,
and Theresa
Welbourne for all of their efforts. Fortunately, the
Division is retaining the services of Judy (staying on as
co-Treasurer) and Wendy, who was elected last spring to be a Division
officer. Also elected were four new at-large Executive Committee
members: Brad
Bell, Brian
Dineen, Ingrid
Fulmer, and Deidra
Schleicher. Congratulations to all and my thanks to
the Division membership for nominating and electing such great people
to the leadership team.
I left our recent meeting excited about what we can accomplish this
year and I would like to share just a few initiatives with you. As
chair, my goal is for you to feel that the HR Division is a relevant
and valuable resource for your professional needs. Regardless of
geography, the size or focus of your institution, your career stage,
or the HR-related topics that interests you, we have initiatives
aimed and better understanding and meeting your needs. For example,
the Practice Liaison Committee (Diane Johnson, chair) is
exploring ways to connect practitioners and researchers so that
Division members can help organizations solve their problems while
gaining access for research. As another example, we have consortia
being planned for junior faculty (Miguel Quinones, chair),
advanced doctoral students (Jenny
Hoobler, chair), and a new PDW session planned for
doctoral students who are not yet at the dissertation proposal stage.
Additional initiatives by the Teaching Committee and International
Committee are described elsewhere in this newsletter. A final
initiative is to improve the Division's organizational memory and to
better institutionalize our best practices. To help with this effort,
Wendy Casper
has been appointed Division Knowledge Manager.
The HR Division is fortunate to have hundreds of members volunteering
on our various committees. More information on each of the Division's
committees, and contact information for the Committee chairs, can be found
on the Division Website (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102839712511&s=6568&e=001HDWwpI1G23NyhCqJ_mN8M9tgJfxiCGkPCoMVnF0ucDPQAwEYP0eWiP-elq3egbbCdMmy5455R4-nl7TOe7lIwXj8BfMnAak_Pw6IbjHXmNA=).
I am very proud of the volunteer spirit of our Division, but would
like to see even more people actively involved. I know everyone is
crazy busy, but we need your help to make the HR Division everything
you want and need it to be! If you are interested in being more
involved in the HR Division or if you have any suggestions, please
send me an e-mail (mailto:klein_12@fisher.osu.edu) or contact any
other Division officer, Executive Committee member, or committee
chair. Another way to contribute, of course, is to submit your ideas
for Professional Development Workshops and your Scholarly work to the
HR Division for the upcoming Academy meetings in Montreal.
The HR Division is also undergoing review this year, in which we will
be reflecting on how well we are serving your needs, identify areas for
improvements, and decide upon strategic goals and actions for the
future. I want to thank all of you who took the time to complete the
recent member survey. Your perspectives and suggestions are a key
part of our review. The completed review report will be posted on the
HR Division website in February and will be discussed at our business
meeting in Montreal.
I believe that we have some of the best jobs in the world. We may not
be curing cancer, but what we do - and HR as a field - is important.
The biggest issues facing organizations today are human and social
capital issues...and that is HR! -Howard

2010 HR DIVISION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
|
Reminder for Call for PDW Proposals
You are encouraged to work with colleagues both within
and outside of the HR Division in developing and submitting proposals
for PDW sessions, which are scheduled prior to the scholarly program
between 8:00AM Friday (8/6/10) and 8:00PM Saturday (8/7/10).
The PDW format is highly flexible and can take nearly any form
(workshops, tutorials, panels, debates, round table discussions,
etc.). PDWs provide the opportunity to experiment with new models and
ideas for sessions that do not fit within the confines of the regular
program. Think about the sessions you wish were offered but have not
seen on the program. The HR Division encourages the submission of
creative ideas for interactive sessions that actively engage
participants in learning new information, skills, techniques, issues,
or questions. PDWs can address any issue of concern to HR scholars
and/or practitioners. Sessions on teaching, international HR, linking
HR research and practice, and facilitating Division member development
are encouraged. Please also consider but do not be bound by the
conference theme - "Dare to Care: Passion and Compassion in
Management Practice and Research." For example, you might
consider putting together a PDW session that aims to integrate passion
and compassion for the teaching, research, and practice of HR and
their interplay; integrates the interests of various stakeholder
groups (employees, managers, customers, the community); and/or
integrates passion for one's work with compassion for others impacted
by one's work.
If you have questions or would like to discuss or suggest a workshop
idea, please contact the HR Division PDW Chair Wendy Boswell at wboswell@tamu.edu
or 979-845-4045 by December 15, 2009.
All proposals should be submitted using the submission process found
at http://submissions.aomonline.org/2010. The
submission deadline is January 14, 2010 but earlier submissions are
encouraged. Note that there is limited space on the PDW program and
we cannot guarantee that all proposals will be accepted.

AOM ANNUAL MEETING 2010
|
Murray Barrick, Program Chair
CALL FOR
PAPERS
The Academy of Management and its divisions and interest groups are
calling for submissions (papers, symposia, and Professional Development
Workshops (PDW) proposals) for the 2010 AOM Annual Meeting, August
6-10, Montreal, Canada. The submission deadline is January 14, 2010
at 5:00 PM EST (New York Time). Click here for more information. The HR Division
encourages submissions that are innovative in terms of format and/or
content. Specifically, the Division is interested in submissions that
pertain to HR-related research, teaching, and service activities.
Recent data suggests that submission rates of members of the HR
division are somewhat below other divisions (as a percentage of
membership). You should be aware that more submissions to the HR
Division would mean more program space and that doing so does not decrease
your chances of acceptance. This occurs because the number of
sessions is a function of the number of proposals submitted per
division. So submit early and submit often!
As always, we encourage submissions that are consistent with the
Division's on-going concern with bridging the science/practice gap or
the conference theme: "Dare to Care: Passion and Compassion in
Management". The Special Theme Call for Papers can be downloaded
here.
CALL FOR REVIEWERS
The HR Division is recruiting scholarly program reviewers for the
2010 Academy of Management Annual Meeting. Please consider signing up
as a reviewer if you have not already done so. Being a reviewer for
the Annual Meeting is a great way to be involved in the HR Division,
be a part of the Academy's scholarly program, and provide visibility
for yourself and your institution. Even if you have reviewed in the
past, you still need to re-sign up to review for the 2010 Academy of
Management Meeting. This occurs because your "areas of
expertise" or keywords are now outdated, as the number of keyword
options have been expanded and some of the options have been
replaced.
By Academy rule, a Division cannot send more than 3 papers to a
reviewer (unless you also agree to be an "emergency"
reviewer). The result is a manageable workload for reviewers but it
also means the HR Division needs a lot of reviewers. We need YOU! The
review period is from January 14, 2010 to February 12, 2010 (review
deadline). Please check your schedule to make sure you will be able
to review during this time frame before signing up. To sign up,
please visit http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102839712511&s=6568&e=001HDWwpI1G23PuqAvpvVmAqmKmBtxDgObFLh57PnsOAcsYq3L4cnf-C0xua7EGhueBoLmNj97M2XYn1UC9WmyQxSbh6o2LTpC2_nRfagNEKDPiFRjuKWnNEQ==
and click the "Sign Up Now" button. Be sure to select the
HR Division when indicating your preferences. The signup process is
fast and easy and should not take longer than 5 minutes.
Thank you for considering this request for your time and expertise!
Murray Barrick,
Texas A&M University, mbarrick@mays.tamu.edu, 2010 HR Division Program
Chair.

2009 HR DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM
|
The HR Division will again be sponsoring a doctoral
consortium for more senior-level doctoral students. The Consortium is
intended for those who are making progress toward completion of their
PhD program, but have not yet defended their dissertation. The program
will begin with a dinner on Friday, August 6, and a full day of
activities, including career advice and research feedback from
leading HR scholars, on Saturday, August 7. Interested students will
be asked to submit their application packet for consideration in
early summer. Please watch for more information from the HR Division
this Spring. For more information, please contact jhoobler@uic.edu.

HR DIVISION JUNIOR FACULTY CONSORTIUM
|
Once again, we are preparing for another exciting Junior Faculty
Consortium at the upcoming Academy of Management Annual Meeting. Last
year's event in Chicago was a huge success. Our thanks to all of our
presenters and participants for an enlightening set of sessions and
conversations.
Mark your
calendars for the 2010 HR Junior Faculty Consortium in Montreal, which
will begin with dinner on Friday, August 6th and run through
Saturday, August 7th. The sessions will address the
critical issues of teaching, research, and the tenure process that
will be relevant for faculty at the starting gate of their academic
careers. There will also be plenty of opportunities to network with
the other participants, senior faculty members from other
universities, and editors from the major journals. All session topics
will be unique from those covered in the HR Division doctoral consortium. Anyone who completed
their PhD within the past 5 years and is looking for tips to succeed
in an academic career in HRM will be welcome to attend the 2009
Junior Faculty Consortium. Please look for further
information in future newsletters.
See you in Montreal!

INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
|
Steve Werner, University of Houston and James Hayton,
Bocconi University
We'd like to thank Liza Castro Christiansen, John Hollenbeck, Pawan
Budwar, Sumita Raghuram, Jarrod Harr, Bard Kuvaas, Michal Biron,
Lucia Miree, Karin Sanders, Usman Raja, Eleni Stavrou, Peter
Odrakiewicz, and Robert Kase for agreeing to be members of this
committee. The website of the IHRMC ( http://www.cba.uh.edu/ihrmc) is now in its
twelfth year. The website is designed to provide academics interested
in International Human Resource Management information regarding the
committee. At the website you will find a listing of the committee
and sub-committee members, as well as a listing of the HR Division
Ambassadors and their biographies.
The Ambassadors program is now in its third year and is a tremendous
success. The Ambassadors Program was initiated by John Hollenbeck,
who chaired the Ambassadors sub-committee last year. This year James
Hayton has taken over as chair of the Ambassadors sub-committee,
which will continue to develop the program. The Ambassadors are HR
division members that are opinion leaders around the world. So far
more than 60 different countries are represented. The Ambassadors are
currently working on an International HRM casebook and an extensive
research project.
The case book will include a collection of short cases that reflect
unique aspects of the practice of HRM in each of the countries in
which our membership is located. The goal is to develop a teaching
resource for use by all members interested in either teaching
International HRM or teaching HRM internationally. In addition to
providing a collection of cases, the finished product is expected to
be supplemented with teaching notes, case questions and access to
supplementary materials, all of which are intended to facilitate and
enrich the case teaching process. To give you some idea of the scope
of this project, to date, we have received abstracts from Austria,
Bulgaria, Cypress, Czech Republic, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland,
Israel, Italy, Mauritius, the Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Poland,
Russia, Sloveniua, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, Uganda and the
UK. We hope to include contributions from the majority of the 62
countries that are home to our division members. The goal is to
complete this project by the next annual meeting of the Academy.
We also have a Pre-conference workshop sub-committee, chaired by Liza
Castro Christiansen. Liza, with the help of James Hayton organized
two well attended PDWs in Chicago. The PDWs were "Two-in-One: A
Casebook on the Critical HR Dimensions in Different Countries and an
Article Series on (a Cross-National Survey of) the Perceived
Effectiveness of HR" and "Location, Location, Location:
Developing international perspectives on Strategic HRM". Liza is
again chairing the sub-committee this year and is currently working
on organizing two PDWs for Montreal. Please let her know if you have
workshop ideas.
This committee exists to provide needed services to Academy members
interested in International HRM. We also have the goal of developing
initiatives that will allow the HR Division to better meet the needs
of its international members, which now comprise 40% of the division
membership. To help achieve this we have recently formed a
sub-committee which is charged with providing the executive committee
with some alternative methods of meeting international member needs.
Please let us know if you have any ideas. Although we have these
three projects on-going, the committee is always open to undertaking
other projects. If you have any suggestions or comments of other
services this Committee could provide please do not hesitate to let
us know. Thanks and have a great year!

TEACHING COMMITTEE REPORT
|
The Teaching Committee is now comprised of 14 members and four
subcommittees. The committee members are David Balkin, Tanya
Bondarouk, Thomas Calo, Catherine Giunta, Claudia Ferrante, Jason
Fertig, Lori Long, Jeffrey Mello, Laura Parks, Deidra Schleicher, Carolyn
Wiley, Nancy Woolever, and Cheryl Wyrick. Subcommittees are Community
of Practice subcommittee, PDW subcommittee, Teaching Award
subcommittee, and Teaching Conference subcommittee.
Please check the "Awards" portion of the HR Division
website for information on how to apply for this year's Innovative
Teaching Award. Submissions are due by Feb. 1, 2010.
The PDW subcommittee is tentatively planning to offer a PDW at the
Montreal conference on "Keeping HR Teaching Relevant in a
Management Curriculum."
As part of the membership survey sent to all HR Division members, the
Teaching Committee included questions about the possibility of a
conference devoted specifically to teaching HRM. The Teaching
Conference subcommittee will be analyzing results.
As always, please let us know if you have ideas for our committee.

New PDW: Pre-Dissertation Doctoral Student Workshop
|
We are pleased to announce a new professional development workshop
(PDW) for the HR division this year. We have always had an
outstanding doctoral consortium for advanced/senior doctoral students
but this year we are pleased to announce a new workshop geared toward
more junior doctoral students. The goal of this workshop is to help
doctoral students who are in the first few years of their programs
(pre-dissertation) to navigate career issues such as:
· What are effective strategies for completing a doctoral
dissertation?
· What do I need to do in order to be an outstanding teacher?
· How can I begin a program of research when I'm just learning about
the field?
· How can I best prepare for the job market and my future career?
We will have a number of outstanding speakers talking from experience
on these topics to help our junior doctoral students be best prepared
to take on a long and successful career. More details regarding the
specifics of the workshop will be coming but in the meantime be sure
to plan on attending (or sending your junior students) to this new
and innovative workshop for junior HR doctoral students!
